Charles Tweedale Violin

Charles Tweedale
Full size

Named the "Alessandro".

Charles Tweedale was the vicar of Weston, and friend of Arthur Conan Doyle, who between 1900 and 1940 made a large quantity of violins. His instruments are based principally on Stradivarius and Guarnerius models.

As a spiritualist, he claimed to have met with Stradivari, and gleaned the recipe for his Cremona varnish. His instruments are very well made and have unique charm.

Two piece back of broad flamed maple, descending slightly from the joint, and ribs and neck of close rippled maple. Front of fine grained pine, broadening to the flanks. Attractive thick red/brown varnish with fine petina craquelure.

A good example of this makers work.
