James Thompson Violin
James Thompson
Full size
Bearing label "James Thompson, Maker, Old Heston, 1840". This violin is in original condition, and is the earliest known example from this, the most northern English maker. We have handled several of Thompson's viols, and this is the earliest one we have seen. This is a simple, honest violin, prior to his adoption of the long pattern Strad. A two piece back of local, bird's eye maple, with ribs and neck of similar wood. Front of fine grained pine. Inked purfling, and an attractive red varnish.
