Henry Lockey-Hill Viola
Henry Lockey-Hill
Full size
A superb example of the best maker of the Hill family. Henry Lockey-Hill was the earliest member to adopt the Strad model, and the wood, modeling and varnish is beautiful. With a back length of 15 3/8th (392mm), this instrument is well suited to the smaller player. The deeply rippled maple back is of distinctive flame, wood usually only found in Hill family instruments. The ribs and neck are of similar wood. The two piece front is of reeded spruce, again typical of Henry Lockey-Hill, and the instrument is evenly coated with a fine, transparent, golden varnish. |
