Music School CelliFor starter level instruments in small sizes (up to half size), the Stentor Student mark II is still the best thing on the market. They have ebony fingerboards and pegs, so are serviceable. For better instruments, the Prima 200 is really outstanding - well made and use a good model which always works well for the student. We do at least £160 worth of upgrading on these instruments, in order to get the best out of them, and more on the full size instruments, adding better strings and a carbon bow to the outfit. Prima 200. We recommend the Prima 200 as the first really decent cello at an affordable price. These are great instruments with a generous outline giving consistently good tone. We upgrade them in our workshop to get the best playability and tone, by working on the bridge, fingerboard, pegs, nuts and replace the tail piece and strings with first class alternatives. Finally we also improve the outfit by supplying it with a better quality carbon fibre bow. Upgraded outfits are around £850 for full size, and around £699 for 1/4 to 3/4 sizes. Stentor Student II. We consider these to be the cheapest entry level instruments of quality. These celli are supplied with ebony pegs and fingerboard, and set up and improved in our workshop. For our upgraded versions, the 1/4 size is £475, the 1/2 size is £485 and the 3/4 size is £525. Westbury. Westbury celli are resonant and responsive, and represent a step up in quality, with better tonewoods, varnish and workmanship. We set them up in our workshop, and supply them as an outfit with carbon fibre bow and padded cover for £1050.
