Made by Lorenzo Bellafontana, (b1906, d1979) in Genoa.

This cello comes from Bellafontana’s estate, and it’s full history is well known. Originally commissioned for the Conservatoire in Genoa. Very powerful and responsive instrument. The instrument came to us through a colleague of mine who originally worked for Bellafontana.

A two piece back of well rippled maple, attractive tonewood throughout, and a rich red/brown varnish. This instrument fine quality contradicts the notion that Bellafontana's work deteriorated in his latter years. The arching, purfling and edgework are dynamic and vigorous but without roughness. This all goes towards a excellent playing instrument full of character.
